Hawaiian Coleslaw

This Hawaiian coleslaw made me think I was enjoying a nice lunch on a tropical beach. I loved the sweetness from the pineapple. The ‘pop’ of citrus from the mandarin oranges. And then there’s my favorite, maraschino cherries. Ok, maybe those aren’t so much tropical but they’re good! All in an easy-to-make creamy slaw (just make sure you dry the pineapple, oranges and cherries well!) that disappears in no time. This is one of my favorite coleslaws!

Hawaiian Coleslaw

Take The Time

It’s important that you get the fruits dried well before adding them into this Hawaiian coleslaw. You don’t want a soggy, runny slaw. You want it creamy. Not soupy. And you definitely don’t want the cherries to ‘run’ into the slaw. That might taste great, but it’s not going to ‘wow’ anyone at first glance. So take the extra few minutes and dry them well. You’ll be rewarded for your efforts!

  • Combine the coleslaw mix and the mayonnaise in a large bowl.
  • Gently fold in the pineapple, oranges and the cherries.
  • Season with salt and pepper to taste and stir.
  • Refrigerate for 3-4 hours before serving.

Notes

Stir again before serving.
You want the pineapples, oranges and cherries well-drained before adding them to the coleslaw mix. You don’t want the extra liquid in the salad, and you definitely don’t want the cherries to discolor it.

Diner-Style Coleslaw

I do love a cold, creamy coleslaw. Nothing fancy. And maybe a little vinegary kick. But not much. This diner-style coleslaw is my kind of slaw. Perfect on a hot day, for lunch or dinner. Perfect on a cool day too. And crazy easy to make. This slaw reminds me of the ones you’d find in the glass cases in the diners of old. The ones with the sliding doors. Made early that morning, wrapped in plastic wrap, and chilled to perfection!

Diner-Style Coleslaw

Nice And Creamy

I use Blue Plate mayonnaise in all of my slaws. For me, it’s the best-tasting, creamiest mayonnaise around. You can use your favorite. Even though this diner-style coleslaw isn’t complicated, better ingredients make for a better slaw.

I didn’t have white balsamic vinegar on hand. I knew I didn’t want to use regular ole balsamic vinegar. Though it’d add the same flavor, it’d discolor the slaw. That wouldn’t be good. I used apple cider vinegar instead and the slaw come out fantastic. Problem solved!

Blue Cheese Salad Dressing

Brother Jimmy’s BBQ: More than 100 Recipes is packed full of great recipes. From BBQ to tailgating to… salad dressing! I picked up a copy because because it just so happened that I was making wings for lunch and I needed something (other than bottled Ranch dressing) for dipping. This blue cheese salad dressing was it. And this will be it from now on, because this is the easiest, best blue cheese dressing you can make. Not only great for wings, it’s great on salads or for dipping veggies. Anything.

Blue Cheese Salad Dressing

Easy. And Great. And Lightly Funky.

It is blue cheese salad dressing so it’s got blue cheese in it! And that of course means blue cheese flavor. And funk. But not too much funk. This is recipe is spot-on perfect in the funkiness category.

There are so many great cookbooks, and so little time. Our local library has online checkout of literally thousands of cookbooks. That’s great and…. sorta not great! Easy access to tons and tons of cookbooks means I read them for hours and hours on end. I end up bookmarking recipe after recipe. And then my stomach starts to growl. So then I end up making recipe after recipe. And the cycle continues! Day after day!

Blue Cheese Thousand Island Salad Dressing

This is salad dressing elevated. More flavors than I can even describe in each and every bite. This blue cheese thousand island salad dressing quickly became the star of our dinner side salads this week. Hints of traditional flavors but with wonderful bell peppers and blue cheese (and a few other things). This is a crazy-good dressing that I’d make again and again.

Blue Cheese Thousand Island Salad Dressing

Squeeeeeeeze

There is a little trick to making this blue cheese thousand island salad dressing. If you’re not careful, it’ll end up a bit runny and thin. Now, the flavor will still be there so don’t panic if yours is a bit on the thin side. You can prevent it by making sure that the ingredients are as dry as possible before you add them. The ones that aren’t liquid to begin with, that is. It’s kind of hard to pat sour cream dry… Anyways, just make sure the onion for sure is squeezed well to get the moisture out. The peppers and relish, well, just give them a quick dab with a paper towel.

Oh and don’t use anything ‘light’ in this. Light usually means thin and we don’t want thin here.

Down Home Buttermilk Salad Dressing

Me and any salad dressing containing buttermilk are friends. For me, it makes for the perfect basis for a good dressing. This down home buttermilk salad dressing isn’t complicated. There’s really not much in it. It lets that wonderful buttermilk flavor come through, without burying it. This dressing is thinner, but not crazy thin. So it’s also great for dipping veggies. And oh, of course, wings!

Down Home Buttermilk Salad Dressing

Leave It Alone

This down home buttermilk salad dressing needs some alone time in the fridge before you serve it. Just cover it and let it go. Six hours at least. Overnight is better. It’ll thicken up slightly (but not much). And the flavors will meld. Give it a stir and you’re ready to go! It’s just that simple.

Thai Sweet Chili Salad Dressing

Every few weeks or so, we have salads every night of the week. Oddly, it’s known as ‘salad week’! But truthfully, it is a nice fresh change. And it doesn’t mean that it’s a week of sadness. I mix it up by using a large variety of ingredients. And I always make at least one homemade salad dressing. Like this wonderful Thai sweet chili dressing. This dressing is a wonderful combination of tropical flavors, a little heat and a lot of Asian inspiration. This is the kind of dressing that makes me look forward to salad week!

Thai Sweet Chili Salad Dressing

A Lot Of Greatness

Your salad doesn’t have to be Asian in nature to enjoy this Thai sweet chili dressing. It’s great no matter what you toss onto the plate.

I’m a huge fan of coconut milk and I was happy to see that this recipe has plenty of it. And fish sauce. Now, fish sauce is one strong smelling, funky sauce. But don’t fear it. It really makes this dressing amazing. If you’re not sure about it, add a little, taste, and add more if you want. I use an expensive, quality fish sauce. I learned early on that you get what you pay for, especially when it comes to fish sauce.

Penn Station Ham And Swiss Sub In A Tub

I’m not that fancy or complicated. And usually, neither are my lunches. That’s not to say that I don’t enjoy them, though. I coulda gotten dressed (I work from home) and grabbed a sub for lunch. Or have it delivered I guess. But I wasn’t in the mood and I’m cheap. So I made a Penn Station Ham and Swiss sub in a tub instead! And boy was it a mighty delicious salad! Fresh ingredients, ready in no time. And heck, I even felt better after eating it!

Everything is here on my Penn Station Ham And Swiss sub in a tub that can be found on the store-made sandwich. And even more, sometimes. I can make this my way. For the dressing I just grab whatever suits my fancy! This isn’t complicated. Just a nice lunch. Oh and I can add bread if I want to…. as croutons!

Tangy French Salad Dressing

My wife and I both made the ‘wow’ face when we first tried this tangy French salad dressing. This is our kind of good stuff. Nice and creamy. Fantastic flavor with a hint of vinegar and a little sweetness. The perfect balance. This dressing made our good salads great!

Tangy French Salad Dressing

A Lot Of Dressing

This recipe for a tangy French salad dressing makes quite a few servings. Don’t let that scare you. You don’t have to use it just for salads. We didn’t. It’s great just for dunking vegetables. Carrot sticks, cherry tomatoes, radishes… all of them are better after spending a little time in this dressing. But the real winner? Using the dressing on a sandwich. Skip your usual mayo or whatever you use and try this instead. It’s fantastic on sandwiches!
